Although there is great interest in multi-modal applications on mobile devices, there are actually very few deployments, and as such there is little shared knowledge in the community about best practices for designing and documenting multi-modal applications. The goal of this workshop is to produce a design for a sample multi-modal application, and experiment with different methods for documenting multi-modal designs. More broadly, as in past years, the workshop provides a great opportunity to network with practitioners from varied specialties, including voice, interactive, digital, and related areas.
As in past workshops, we will be publishing the output of the discussions on www.avixd.org and this year, also on www.ixda.org.
This is a hands-on workshop. First, in small groups, participants will work from a requirement spec to produce a design of a multi-modal application. Then, each group will share their findings with the whole workshop. We anticipate attendance of approximately 30 participants, including a mix of experience levels and practice areas, as well as engaged learners.
Who should attend?
The workshop welcomes any practitioners interested in speech interaction design on mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets. Direct experience is not required for participation.
Free! But a submission in advance is required (see next section)
How to participate
To participate, submit a description of an application you’d like to design. We encourage you to choose a mobile application you are passionate about, and that you believe would benefit from the addition of speech. Example domains include (but are not limited to): calendar; medical history; home health-care monitoring; travel booking; financial services; automotive; or telecom self-service. The submission itself should include a very brief set of requirements that explains what the app does, who uses it, and descriptions of a few sample interactions.
Deadline for submissions: 13 July 2012. Invitations for accepted submission: 20 July 2012.

We look forward to seeing you in New York!
